Lobster fishing is part of the larger fishing industry. It uses tools such as boats, navigation, and lobster traps.

Lobster traps are a popular means of catching lobsters. Lobster traps also called lobster pots in British English, whose frames are made out of strong wire mesh or plastic wires. Using lobster traps allows a fisher to harvest far more lobsters in the same amount of time than does scuba diving to catch lobster by hand.

Lobster traps are found in circular, semi circular, rectangular, square, and other shapes in different sizes. Most of them are about 48"L x 18"W x 15"H. Moreover, lobster traps must have in it a 2⅜×11½ inch-sized escape hole to allow under-sized lobsters to escape the trap.

When fishing the lobster, a piece of bait, often fish or chum, is placed inside the trap, and the traps are dropped onto the sea floor. A long rope is attached to each trap, at the end of which is a plastic or styrofoam buoy that bears the fisherman's license number.

Besides fishing lobster, lobster traps are also great for use in decorating a home garden area and it provides a nautical theme around the home or business.
